What Makes a Good Custom Cookie Box

Custom cookie boxes have to do three things well: protect the product during transit, present it clearly on the shelf or in a gift, and carry the brand. Most off-the-shelf stock boxes do one of these adequately. A custom box built to your specification does all three.

The material, wall construction, and insert configuration all affect how your cookies arrive. Getting these decisions right at the brief stage prevents the most common outcome — cookies that look perfect leaving the bakery and arrive broken or crushed at the customer’s door.

    Material Options

Cardboard (SBS / Coated White Board) — 250 to 420 GSM. The standard choice for custom cookie boxes. Coated white SBS board takes full-colour offset printing better than any other food packaging material — colours are vivid, detail is sharp, and the surface accepts all lamination and finishing options cleanly. 300 GSM is right for most cookies up to a standard pack weight. 420 GSM gives additional rigidity for larger boxes or heavier contents that need the sidewalls to hold without bending.

Kraft Cardboard Natural brown or white kraft for bakeries and cookie brands with an artisan, organic, or eco-conscious identity. FSC-certified material available. Kraft can undergo full colour printing, but base colour printing is not recommended on custom cookie boxes.

Corrugated Board Single-wall corrugated for cookie brands shipping DTC and needing transit protection as a priority. The fluted inner layer absorbs impact during handling and shipping in a way that a cardboard box cannot. A corrugated mailer box is most commonly used. You can either put cookies directly into it Or place your custom cookie boxes in the mailer box and ship it with that.

Rigid Stock (1000–3000 GSM) Hardboard construction for premium gifting, luxury artisan cookie brands, and corporate gifting sets. Custom Rigid boxes are structured — they do not fold flat — which means they present beautifully on a table or shelf and are kept and reused by recipients. Available in rigid magnetic closure, two-piece lid-and-tray, and drawer formats. Surface takes gold foiling, embossing, and soft-touch lamination cleanly. The cost per unit is higher than that of cardboard, which is appropriate for products priced at the premium end of the market.

    Box Styles for Cookie Packaging

Tuck-End Boxes: Straight tuck or reverse end tuck boxes. The most widely used retail cookie box format — lightweight, flat-packed for storage efficiency, and quick to assemble on a production line. Available in all cardboard and kraft weights. Window die-cuts can be incorporated into the front or lid face.

Window Boxes: A tuck-end or auto-bottom box with a clear PET film window cut into the front or lid. The window panel is pasted to the inside of the die-cut aperture, creating a clean, transparent display. This is the most effective retail packaging style for Custom cookie boxes — product visibility at the point of sale directly reduces buyer hesitation. The shape and position of the window are fully custom.

Sleeve Packaging A printed sleeve that wraps around a tray or directly around a stacked cookie format. Common for premium single-serve cookies, biscotti, and long cookie formats. The sleeve carries all branding; the inner tray can be plain. Gives a modern, minimal presentation at a lower unit cost than a full enclosure box.

Mailer Boxes: One of the most used box styles for bulk quantities of boxes. It can be paired with cardboard inserts to hold the cookies separately

Rigid Two-Piece and Magnetic Closure for gifting formats. The lid sits over the tray or closes magnetically. These boxes are sent assembled or flat-packed, depending on construction. Interior can be printed and lined with tissue paper. Used for Christmas cookie gift sets, corporate gifting runs, and wedding favour cookie boxes.

    Inserts for Custom Cookie Boxes

Broken cookies are the most common complaint in DTC cookie fulfilment. The cause is almost always movement inside the box — a custom cookie box that fits the cookie count but does not hold each piece in position.

Custom-fit cardboard inserts are die-cut to the dimensions of your cookies and create individual pockets or rows that prevent lateral movement during transit in custom cookie boxes. For decorated cookies where the surface design is part of the product, inserts are not optional — they protect the presentation, not just the biscuit.

We work with food-grade cardboard inserts for custom cookie boxes, it can be in the zig-zag format or criss-cross format, depending upon requirements.

Print and Finishing Options in Custom Cookie Boxes

All print is directly on the box surface — not applied as a label after production.

Print methods: Offset printing for runs of 500 units and above, where colour consistency is critical. Digital printing for shorter runs, faster turnaround, and designs with fine photographic detail.

Lamination: Gloss lamination for vivid colour and a high-shine surface. Matte lamination for a more refined, premium feel. Soft-touch matte for a velvet-like tactile finish is increasingly common on artisan and premium bakery brands.

Special finishes: Gold or silver foil stamping on logo or design elements. Spot UV — gloss varnish applied selectively over a matte base, typically on logo or pattern areas. Embossing and debossing for raised or recessed effects on brand marks.

Seasonal and Occasion Cookie Box Packaging

Cookie brands have predictable seasonal peaks — Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Halloween, and Easter. Each occasion typically requires a separate print run with different artwork. The most practical approach for seasonal packaging is to keep the custom cookie boxes size and construction identical across runs and change only the print artwork. We recommend ordering seasonal runs 8–10 weeks ahead of the occasion to allow for production and USA-wide delivery.

    Who We Supply

Artisan bakeries moving from stock boxes to branded Cookie Box packaging for the first time — typically starting at 100–200 units per design, scaling with volume as retail listings grow.

DTC cookie subscription brands — regular monthly or fortnightly runs where consistent box quality and on-time delivery are as important as the print specification.

Corporate gifting agencies — branded cookie gift sets for client and employee gifting, ordered per campaign. Often require a specific, rigid, or magnetic closure format with premium finishing.

Wholesale bakeries supplying supermarkets and food service accounts — corrugated or cardboard formats meeting retailer packaging specifications, ordered in higher volumes.

Wedding and events suppliers — small individual favour boxes, 1–4 cookie formats, custom printed with names, dates, or event branding from 100 units.

    FAQ – Custom Cookie Boxes

What cardboard weight should I use for my custom cookie boxes?
300 GSM is suitable for most standard cookie packs — individual cookies, 6-packs, and 12-packs in a flat tuck-end OR Mailer Box style. If your box is larger than 25 × 20 cm or the contents are heavy (dense shortbread, stacked layers), 420 GSM or corrugated cardboard construction can also be used.

Do corrugated cookie boxes look good enough for retail?
Yes, it can be. We do offset printing on a 220 GSM Cardboard and paste it on a corrugated 2-ply sheet. This gives the premium printing quality of offset printing and the strength of corrugated cardboard boxes.

What is the minimum order quantity for custom cookie boxes?
100 units per design. Each distinct size, style, or artwork counts as a separate design.

How do I prevent my cookies from breaking in the box during transit?
The box needs to be sized correctly — a box significantly larger than the product count will allow cookies to shift. Combined with a custom cardboard insert that holds each cookie in its own pocket, movement is eliminated.

What is the lead time for custom cookie boxes?
Standard production is 12–15 business days after artwork approval. For seasonal cookie boxes, we recommend ordering 8-10 weeks in advance for the safer side.
